John Maxwell Cowley was born on February 18, 1923 in Peterborough, South Australia. He earned an honors degree in Physics (1943) and an MSc (1945) at the University of Adelaide and joined the Chemical Physics Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) after graduation. He was granted a leave of absence to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he completed his PhD in 1949. Upon his return to Australia, Cowley rejoined CSIRO...
